Poisoning

  • Immediately call a poison control center, a hospital emergency room, or a doctor.   National Poison Control Center:  1-800-222-1222.
  • Have ipecac syrup on hand, but use only if instructed to do so by a health care professional.

Burns or scalds

  • Contact a doctor immediately
  • Immediately place injured area in cool water or apply a clean cloth dipped in cool water.
  • Do not apply grease, butter, ointments, or powders.
  • Leave any blisters alone.
  • Cover the area loosely with a clean material that won’t stick to the wound, such as aluminum foil.

Head injuries

Treatment:
  • Call a doctor immediately.
  • Have a baby rest quietly.
Danger signs:
  • Loss of consciousness/cannot be awakened.
  • Inability to move arms or legs.
  • Drainage of blood or other fluid from nose, mouth, or ears.
  • Headaches, dizziness, or vomiting.
  • Different sized pupils.

Choking

  • Remove object from mouth only if blockage is visible and can be easily grasped.
  • Learn CPR from your local Red Cross or American Heart Association.
