Bottle-Feeding
1. The formula comes in powdered, liquid concentrate, and ready-to-feed types. You should use formulas "with iron", not formulas "with low iron". The powdered type is the cheapest, and the ready-to-feed is the most expensive. Wipe off the lids of formula cans before opening. Add water to the powdered and liquid concentrated type formula according to the directions on the package. 2. Once a can is opened or formula prepared, it should be refrigerated and used within 48 hours. Opened cans of powdered formula may be stored for 1 month. 3. Formula may be fed at room temperature. Do not use a microwave oven to warm formula. 4. Sterilization of bottles is not needed with a city water supply. Well water should be sterilized by boiling for 5 minutes for at least the first 6 weeks. 5. Feeding the baby positioned in an upright position and frequent burping - every 1 oz of formula - reduces the amount of air swallowed and may reduce gas discomfort. 6. The baby will probably take 2-4 oz. every 3-4 hours. Feed the baby until baby has stopped sucking. This does not necessarily mean that the bottle must be empty. Crying may result if baby feels too full. If leftover formula is immediately refrigerated, it can be reused at the next feeding. 7. Your baby will get enough liquid, nutrients, and vitamins from the formula. Therefore, solids are not needed for many months. Your baby’s nutrition will be reevaluated and discussed at the well-child checkups. 8. The number of bowel movements per day is unimportant if the consistency of the stool is soft and the baby is doing well. The normal stool color will be yellow, brown, or green. |
